About

Leika Akiyama is a Japanese artist who incorporates found objects into assemblages, mandalas and paintings. Raised in the Harajuku neighborhood of Tokyo, Akiyama came to the States for college and stayed. Her work explores the meaning of personal identity through examining her transcultural upbringing in Tokyo juxtaposed with her current life in America.  Akiyama’s work has been exhibited at the DeCordova Museum, the Montserrat College of Art, Salem State University, and Housatonic Museum. Her work has been featured in Pink Globalization Hello Kitty’s Trek across the Pacific by Christine Yano (Duke University Press, 2013).
